A pounding win over the fifth and the last one day international against Sri Lanka ‘A’ crowned the touring team, England ‘A’ as the champions. the match was held at the R. Premadasa Stadium today.
The visitors batting first posted a scintillating score of 330 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted over’s.
The top order batsmen seemed unstoppable and did most of the damage to the Sri Lankan bowlers steering the ball through the gaps to the boundary with occasional shots clearing the ropes.
English batsmen, Joe Roots contributed the most to the massive total with a magnificent unbeaten score of 110 runs where Buttler-64 where Hales-46 partnered Roots down the batting line up.
For Sri Lanka, Tharanga Lakshitha and Malinga Bandara managed to get two wickets each under their belt, but were unable to confine the English batsmen to a lower total.
Out of the six bowlers used by the Sri Lankans, the only economical bowlers were Danushka Gunathileke and Ashan Priyanjan whom managed to keep the over rate below six.
(Danushka - Overs 6, 33 runs, NW / Ashan - Overs 6 / 26 runs / 1 Wicket)
Chasing a score of 330 runs was never easy for the Sri Lankans. Nevertheless with a slow and a steady start, the opening pair kept the score board ticking but the pressure and the accuracy of the English bowlers made the top order of the Sri Lankan batting lineup collapse. Most importantly they made sure not to allow the Sri Lankans to get into partnerships.
With the fading light, Sri Lankan hope of winning the one day series was waded away when the home boys were bowled out for 206 runs in just 37 over’s.
Mahela Udawatte scored the highest runs for SL with 52 runs followed by Ashan Priyanjana with 35 runs.
Samith Patel for England captured 3 wickets for 55 runs in completing his 10 overs, followed by two wickets each for Briggs and Brooks.
