Former Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee Nishantha Ranathunga has reportedly confirmed that he would be running for the SLC elections, scheduled for January 3, 2012.
According to reports, Ranathunga had confirmed his entrance to the upcoming elections last week and further revealed that he would be contesting as an independent candidate.
Both Upali Dharmadasa and Thilanga Sumathipala factions have forwarded their lists of nominations. K. Mathivanan, who is also the Vice President candidate of the Upali Dharmadasa camp, had handed over the list of nominations at the director's office of the Ministry of Sports this afternoon.
It is reported that two posts: the post of secretary and treasurer were left blank in the list of nominations forwarded by the Dharmadasa camp. However, both Michael De Soysa and Nuski Mohamed are recorded in the list of nominations from the Sumathipala camp, for the post of secretary and treasurer, respectively.
Nishantha Ranathunga, who is currently holding a top executive position in a private Sports channel, came under the spotlight for alleged financial mishandlings, during his tenure as the Secretary of SLC interim Committee under the administration chaired by D. S. De Silva.
Speaking to an international news agency recently, Thilanga Sumathipala highlighted that former interim committee officials are accused of ruining the cricket administration in the country. He was quoted saying “The only country in the world that runs with Rs billions of debt after hosting a World Cup is Sri Lanka!"
