Colombo outshines Hambantota

The two strongest teams battled out yesterday at another Senior Nationals Basketball Championship match played at the St. Josephs Girls School Court.

Colombo once again managed to relive the Carlton Basketball Championship glory by defeating the Hambantota team by 51 points to 45.

Both teams struggled to get a grip of the ball during the first quarter due to the slippery conditions that prevailed through out the game. Colombo somewhat gaining quick rhythm created their own pace of the game and began to score points faster than the opponents.

At Half time the scores were 24- 18 in favour of Colombo.

The main weak point in the Hambantota team once again proved to be the lack of proper rebounding as they were struggling with this compoenent during this game as well. Colombo having a strong line up with height advantage took maximum control of this. They managed to shot block most of the Hambantota scoring opportunities putting immense pressure on them.

With the help of Thivanka Perera, the Hamanatota side managed to fight back into the game and bridge the gap between the scores. With 6.56 minutes to go the scores read as 29- 24 with Colombo leading and Hambantota trailing by 5 points. Hambantota, known for their rally in the third qaurter put some immense amount of pressure on the Colombo side with full court defence restricting them in scoring only ten points before the end of the qaurter. At the end of the third quarter the scores were 39- 30 in favour of Colombo.

The lack of proper rebounding and height disadavantage proved to be the match stealing factors for the Hambantota side as they struggled much during the last quarter with such. Thus giving easy access to the opponenets of scoring opportunities the Colombo side sealed the game with a 06 point lead.

At Full Time the scores read as 51 points to 45 in favour of Colombo.

Jagath Banadara and Harshadeva Yasarathana top scored for the Colombo team with 18 and 14 points respectively while Thivanka Perera and Nilanga Wickramarathne scored 16 and 9 points for the Hambantota side.
