03rd Quarter rally saves Hambantota

The 49th Senior National Basketball Championship commenced yesterday at 3 different venues. In one of the matches Hambantota managed to squeeze through a nerve tangling win over the Sri Lankan Air Force Team with final scores running as 50-48 points.

Air Force team was in commendable form at the start of the match as they took complete control of the game till half time. The first quarter proved to be pretty interesting even with highly wet and slippery court conditions. Scoring the first points in the game, the Air Force team opened the game with a lot of fast breaks and steals. Hambantota on the other hand were struggling to score through solid shots, nevertheless at the end of the first quarter the scores were 14-08 in favour of Air Force.

Hambantota lacked one component for the entire match- the quick rebounds.. Air Force having the height advantage took complete use of this weak link in the opponent’s side. However Hambantota still hanging on to the match put up a good show in the second quarter with a number of steals master minded by Foushan playing the point guard position.

At Half Time the scores read 27-23 in favour of Air Force.

Coming back into the second half of the game Hambantota got off to a good start with commendable performance by number 12 Terrance Denzil who was dazzling with his sneaky passes. At the end of the third quarter scores were 37-34 in favour of Hambantota.

The final quarter proved to very adrenaline pumping as Hambantota managed to tie the scores at one stage of the match with just 2.15 minutes to go. Thivanka Perera helped the visitors to secure the match with couple of quick rebounds and crucial free throws.

Full time the scores read as 50-48 in favour of Hambantota.

Top scores for the game was Thivanka Perera of Hambantota who scored 20 points while Dilup Fernando scored 16 points for the home side.
