The Under 19 Inter-international girls Basketball finals held today at the British School proved to be a 'nail biting' encounter.
The two contending teams for 1st place were Asian International School (AIS) and Overseas International School, whilst the British School in Colombo were placed third overall. This was OSC’s first time at the finals of this tournament, making it an unpredictable match.
The first quarter began with AIS having full control of the jump start but OSC maneuvered the ball in their favor. However not long into the game AIS succeed to score with Anisha Jaleel giving them an early start. OSC was trying to make their mark by attempting a few baskets but kept missing by inches. Jaleel went on to score three more baskets in quick succession and Amani Perera contributed with a goal, giving AIS a 10 point lead within the first few minutes. OSC then scored a point on a free throw putting them in the game. Maadhumita Ravi, Captain of AIS also scored for the girls with a 2 pointer as did Amani Perera with an impressive lay up. As the second quarter began, under dogs OSC were rejuvenated and were ready to make an impact on the game. However, it was evident that AIS would leave no room for that as Jaleel and Perera contributed in increasing their team’s lead. Vera Benar helped OSC get back on track with a two pointer that seemed to raise the hopes of her team and resulted in the immediate improvement in their defense. But Ravi, captain of AIS made sure their opponents would not have an upper hand in any other way and scored a goal for her team. Jaleel also helped further the lead of AIS by scoring her fourth goal of the match. AIS continued to shine as Perera went on to score 4 goals for her team and Ravi and Isurika Pathirana helped her in increasing AIS’s lead bringing the score to 32-9 in favor of AIS.
The third quarter got on the way with both teams making an uneasy start. But Ravi continued to shine through along with Perera making them the key players of the match. Sascha Shilpey helped score for OSC helping them press on towards the last few minutes of the quarter. The fourth and final quarter definitely saw a shift in the mood of the players as the game began to tense up. The underdogs OSC tried desperately to score and Shilpey and Chrisni Medez did help their team do so by scoring on their free throws. The highlight of the quarter came from OSC’s Patchin Saksirnetkul who scored with a very impressive three pointer along with some two pointer goals. Arseculeratne also tried to keep the OSC girls in high spirits by scoring the last goal of the match.
