The first Semi-Final of the Clifford Cup that took place between Kandy SC and CR & FC at Pallekele last week, saw a frightful incident in the 50th minute. Hirantha Manamendra, the young hooker of CR & FC, who has been a standout player in the recent past, was stretched off the field after suffering a gory injury.
Manamendra, broke his ankle after going into contact and falling in an awkward position as some heavy defenders piled on top of him.
Following the incident, the former Kingswoodian was immediately taken to the Kandy General Hospital where surgery was performed successfully. He is reportedly recovering now and is expected to be transferred to the Colombo General Hospital in the coming days.
Manamendra is an up-and-coming star in the CR outfit but unfortunately, with the injury, a long layoff is at hand, according to medical experts.
