St Sylvesters v St Sebastians

St. Sylvester’s College Kandy recorded a convincing first innings victory over St.Sebastian’s College Moratuwa in a group D match of the “Singer Cup” under 19 Division one tournament held at the Peradeniya University grounds on this Mondayand Tuesday.

Sebastianites won the toss and invited the hosts to take the first lease of the wicket. Accordingly, they posted a decent 210 as their first innings total, assisted by Manjith Rajapaksha who stroked a half-ton. Sachintha Silva who was the pick of the bowlers claimed 3 scalps.

Against the tight leg spin attack of Sivakumar Tyron, the boys from Moratuwa were not able to surpass the opponent’stotal as they were cramped for 163.

On the back of two fruitful partnerships, Vesters added another 222 for the loss of 5 in reply, before declaring the game. Opening batsman Avindu Herath (66) and Skipper Malith Premathilake (50*) anchored their batting.

The 2nd innings batting of Sebs was too belligerent for the Vesters as right-hander Mishane Silva hammered a quick-fire 71 off 27 balls that comprised seven fours and five mammoth sixes. Manjith Rajapaksha captured three wickets registering the first innings victory for the hosts.

Lumbini v Gurukula

Gurukula College Kelaniya thumped Lumbini College Colombo by 5 wickets in a group C match of the Under 19 Division one Schools Cricket Tournament which concluded at the Prison Grounds in Mahara, today.

Electing to bat first, Lumbini College piled-up 131 runs on the board. Janith Dias who top-scored for the team unfortunately fell just 3 runs short of his half-century. Nuwan Chanaka and Pruthuvi Rusara rattled the Lumbinians’ batting line-up claiming 3 wickets apiece.

Chanaka Devinda and Ashen Maleesha strangled Gurukula batting by sharing seven wickets between themselves as Gurukula was haplessly bowled out for a ‘Nelson’ (111 runs) in their 1st innings.

Having the 1st innings lead in hand,  the Lumbinians were not able to heap sufficient runs on the scoreboard to give the oppostion a challenging target. Jayamal Wanniarachchi claimed a five-wicket haul confining the 2nd innings total to 106.

In persuit of 126 runs to win, Gurukula came out to bat in the latter part of the second session on day two. Tharindu Tharaka who played a match-winning knock finished the game in style and remained unbeaten on 52.
