Gold for Gayanthika at Asian Indoor

Gayanthika Abeyrathne secured the third medal for Sri Lanka at the 8th Asian Indoor Athletic Championship in Teheran, Iran.

Abeyrathne won Gold in the women’s 1500m clocking a time of 4:26.83 secs in a dominant show with the second placed Tatyana Neroznak of Kazakhstan only clocking a time of 4:28.20.Thi Oanh Nguyen won the Bronze medal clocking 4:28.87. The victorious Sri Lankan was ahead of the rest of the pack from the beginning and managed to remarkably control the race to clinch gold.

Abeyrathne also took part in the women’s 800m final on the opening day of the competition and was placed fourth behind Nimali Liyanarachchi from Sri Lanka who won the Bronze medal opening the medal tally for Sri Lanka. An important cog in the wheel for Sri Lankan medal hopes at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games later this year, Abeyrathne’s confidance would have definitely received a boost with clinching the Gold medal. Sri Lanka now have Three medals at the 8th Asian Indoor Athletic Championship having won two Bronze (Nimali Liyanarachchi, Upamalika Rathnajumari) and a Gold (Gayanthika Abeyrathne).
