Gamers Festival – Sri Lankan Cyber Olympics 2014

Are you a hard core gamer? Do you feel the butterflies when you see an Xbox 360? Do you constantly picture yourself in a Baghdad like dessert city running around with an AK47 taking down the bad guys one by one?

Then head down to the BMICH on December 19th- 21st and you’ll be in for a real treat. A massive three day gaming tournament titled Sri Lanka Cyber Games 2014 is being held at the BMICH this month which will see gamers from all over the country outsmart each other to be the champions of local computer gaming – an interactive entertainment form that is gaining popularity among Sri Lankan youth at a rapid pace. This one of a kind event promises to be one that’ll leave gamers, whether they’re experienced or at beginner level, breathless and wanting more.

Is comparing SLCG to the Olympics fair? Indeed it seems to be. Competitive gaming is a huge industry, a far cry from the time-wasting bouts of single player that everyone gets hooked onto at some point. A game has its own sports, its own rules, and only the best win. Many countries have embraced eSports as a whole – South Korea, for example, the longstanding breeding ground of international strategy game champions, is home to entire houses where players to nothing but eat, sleep and train; the United States immigration services gives visiting League of Legends players the same designation it gives to pro NBA athletes. Sri Lanka has a long, long way to go, but thanks to SLCG, it’s getting there.

Video games, whether it’s hardcore multiplayer or casual mobile games, have always been a part of the urban youths’ day to day life in Sri Lanka. In 2007, Gamer.LK (www.gamer.lk) was formed by like-minded gamers who wanted to foster the hobby and bring international standards to the local scene. The annual Sri Lanka Cyber Games e-Sports tournament was conceived in 2008, where it brought together the best cyber-athletes from around the country. Six years later, the competitive e-Sports scene in Sri Lanka is 4 times its size and rivals tournaments in South Asia in size and quality.

The tournament will be held for three consecutive days, on a knockout basis, or in other words, an elimination process.
