Bidding for the first ever Sri Lanka Super Sevens took place this afternoon at the sports ministry auditorium where the franchises battled it out in the bidding stage to capture the best-suited talent for their respective teams from the draft of the local players. 

The first edition of the Super Sevens series will kick off on the 5th August at the Race Course International stadium. The first leg will be on 5th & 6th followed by the second leg on 12th & 13th August and will be held at the same venue.

With over 100 players included in the initial draft, the local players were equally distributed amongst the eight teams with the stage set for an extravagant sevens series that will take place in a fortnight’s time.

The Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) laid out the bidding conditions in order to be fair by all franchises allowing each franchise team to pick only two players from the national sevens squad. As a result, the  16 players of the national sevens squad were evenly distributed among the teams.

The rugby players were divided into three categories of players. Category A players were auctioned between Rs. 500,000 up to a maximum value of Rs. 750,000/- while Category B players had a minimum slab of Rs. 300,000 /= going up to a  maximum of Rs. 500,000/=. The final category which was Category 3 were players who were auctioned between the price range of  Rs. 150,000/= to Rs. 300,000/=.

In addition to the local players, a bidding will take place for the international players who would feature in the Super Sevens and each team is entitled to have three foreign players. Also, each franchise is entitled to have another three extra local players.
