Dharmaraja College vs St. Anthony's College

St. Anthony’s College secured a convincing victory over Dharmaraja College in Kandy to finish second in the Plate Championship of the Singer Schools Rugby League. The Antonians managed to score 32 and the hosts scored only 12.

It was a windy evening after a heavy shower in Kandy as the hosts’ Buwaneka Udangamuwa’s kick-started the game. The hooker MP Heyarapitiya’s pick ‘n go brought the early try for Dharmaraja. They managed to get the extra two points as well. (Dharmaraja 7-00 St.Anthony’s)

Despite scoring early the Rajans weren’t able to keep their lead stable. The Antonians center Ishara Liyanage managed to sneak through the Rajans’ defence to score a much needed try. Chamodh Wanasinghe managed to equalize the score with an easy conversion. (Dharmaraja 7-7 St.Anthony’s )

Both teams found it difficult to handle the ball as it was slippery. Eventually the ball turned over in favour of the Antonians after the Rajans dropping the ball forward. The visitors were awarded a scrum quite close to the line. After hitting a couple of phases the Antonian half-back Suhail Waseem managed to put the Eagles in the lead by scoring a good try. Despite failing to get the extra two points the Eagles were still leading as the first half came to an end. (Dharmaraja 7-12 St.Anthony’s)

After a hard-fought first half the referee blew the whistle  to commence the second-half. However it didn’t take much time for Mohomed Makarim to make it count for his team. The Eagles were still leading the game, even though the two points weren’t gained. (St. Anthony’s 17-7 Dharmaraja)

Dharmaraja put everything into their defence as the Antonians were dominating the possession. Eventually the Rajans got a small respite as the Antonians conceded a penalty. However it didn’t last too long. KRADP Senevirathne of the Eagles’ squad managed to increase the lead by 5 more. As Chamodh Wanasinghe’s 2 points were also added. (St. Anthony’s 24-7 Dharmaraja)

The Eagles managed to score another try. This time it was the winger Dhulanjana Dharmasiri who managed to extend the gap. Despite failing the kick, the Eagles were still leading. Four players of St. Anthony’s were sent to the sinbin which eventually opened the door for the Rajans to score their second. However it didn’t cause any impact as the Antonians had already sealed the game. (St. Anthony’s 29-12 Dharmaraja)
