Dharamaraja shocks Richmond with first innings victory

Four matches in the Singer Schools U-19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament 2017/18 were conducted around the island today (29).

Dharmaraja College, Kandy vs Richmond College, Galle

The Group C fixture between Dharmaraja College and Richmond College was concluded today at the Dharmaraja College grounds. The match ended in a draw but the crucial first innings points went to Dharmaraja College. After winning the toss, the Rajans chose to bat first and posted 234 all out in their first innings. Right handed batsman Dulaj Bandara top scored with 82 runs and skipper Bawantha Udangamuwa contributed with 76 runs.

In reply, the strong Richmond batting line up managed to score only 130 runs in their first innings. Upendra Warnakulasooriya was the main destroyer with the ball for the lads from Kandy as he picked up 5 wickets for 46 runs. After being asked to follow on, Richmond batsmen put on a much better batting display in the second innings as they declared on 267 for 5.

Sandun Mendis (80*) and Dilum Sudheera (59*) top scored for the lads from Galle. Dharmaraja College was set a target of 164 runs to chase but they only managed to score 76 for 7 wickets as umpires drew stumps on day two. After taking 6 wickets in the first innings, Richmond off spinner Sandun Mendis, took another 5 wickets in the second innings, taking his match tally to 11 for 98.

St. Sebastian’s College, Moratuwa vs D.S. Senanayake College, Colombo

The Group A fixture between St. Sebastian’s College and D.S. Senanayake College commenced today at the Army grounds, Mattegoda. After winning the toss, the D.S. Skipper invited the opposition to take first lease of the wicket.

The lads from Moratuwa put on a good batting display in their first innings as they posted 331 for 8 at stumps on day one. Janishka Perera top scored with 82 runs while Shanal Fernando (81) and Tharusha Fernando (52) chipped in with valuable half-tons for the Sebastian-ites. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

St. Sylvester’s College, Kandy vs Ananda College, Colombo

The Group D fixture between Ananda College and St. Sylvester’s College commenced today at the Ananda College grounds. St Sylvester’s skipper opted to bat first after winning the toss and the visitors posted a solid 308 runs all out in their first innings.

Manoharan Pavithran was the star with the bat for the lads from Kandy as he stroked 85 runs. In reply, Ananda College were 18 for no loss when umpires called stumps on day one. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.

The traditional fixture between Nalanda College and Thurstan College commenced today at the Nalanda College grounds. The hosts’ captain won the toss and decided to field first and Thurstan managed to post 265 for 8 wickets at stumps on day one.

Right hander Janushka Fernando top scored for Thurstan and remained unbeaten on 66 runs. The match will continue tomorrow for day two.
