Crews to churn waters at Diyawanna: What to expect

With the pre-season preparations for the Rowing Nationals underway, the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka (ARASL) has announced the major regattas which will hit the waters of Diyawanna Rowing Centre (DRC) in the upcoming months.

National Junior & Intermediate Championships 2019                                              

The National Junior and Intermediate Championships, which were to be held in August last year, are set to be carried out from the13th to the16th of February at DRC. The regatta will feature the talent of young oarsmen and women under the categories of Under 14 (500m), Under 16 (1000m), Under 18 (2000m) and Intermediate (2000m).

It should be noted that this year the Under 18 events at the Senior nationals will not be held and the winners will be the final selection of junior athletes to be considered into the national Pool. The national coaches reserve the right to mix crew members from different affiliates in order to find the best combinations to represent the country irrespective of their affiliate crews for any such junior championship / regatta. For those participating in the Intermediate category, this will be used as a qualifier for the Senior Nationals

Time trails for Senior Nationals

This will be held on the 23rd of February at DRC. Anyone who wishes to take part in the Senior Nationals Open and U 23 categories have to take part in this. The eligibility criteria for the U23 category is that rowers must 23 years and below (even Under 18 rowers can also participate in this event).

This year, the Senior Nationals will have only the U23 & Open categories while the U18 category will not be featured in the Senior Nationals anymore as the U18s have participated in the Junior Nationals. The event will be held at DRC from the 28th of February to the 2nd of March.

Winners of these events will continue with National Pool training for U18 /U23 /Open from March 23rd onwards.

National Indoor Rowing Championships 2019  

This will be held at the Diyawanna indoor rowing complex on the 5th and 6th of April as the teams will take part in endurance events. The ARASL and the national coaches reserve the right to mix crew members from different affiliates in order to find the best combinations to represent the country irrespective of their affiliate crews. After the best combinations are selected they have to achieve the required timings as this is the point where the national team is finalized. This process will be applicable for all categories (U18, U23 and Open) for both Men and Women.

Rowing National Selection of teams for ARC & AJC

This will be held from the 7th to the 14th of April at DRC. It will consist of time trials and achieving target timings as per ARC, World championships or AJC timings set by the national coaches and national selectors.

The crews have to make the timings set by the ARASL to qualify for consideration for National Selection for ARC & AJC to be held from April 15th onwards.
