Colombo Veterans vying for fifth Masters’ Soccer title

Colombo Veterans FC led by former National player Mohamed Roomy and ably supported by its’ Founder and President Ramanathan Puvanenthiran, is determined to put up a good show at the 13th International Masters Goodwill Soccer Festival.

Colombo Veterans clinch Masters’ Championship

The Colombo Veterans team represented Sri Lanka…

Ten teams will be vying for honours in this tournament which will be played on September 7th, 8th and 9th at City Football Complex and Rifle Green (Saracens Grounds) commencing from 8.00am each day.

This tournament which was inaugurated in 2005 with four teams from India, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka has now been expanded to 10 teams including two European sides.

Chennai Veterans (India), Dubai Expats (UAE), London Olympic Veterans (UK), Medan Veterans (Indonesia), Plames Sports (South Africa), Savanna Veterans (Mauritius), Selangor Veterans (Malaysia), Singapore Veterans Association (Singapore), Sri Lak FC – Milan (Italy) and the hosts Colombo Veterans FC will fight out each other in a round robin basis.

The team that has most points at the end of the tournament will be declared as the champion of the 13th International Masters Goodwill Soccer Festival.

Speaking on this tournament Puvanenthiran added;

“We are privileged and honoured to sponsor and organize a tournament of this caliber which gives the former players to enjoy themselves and recollect the past glories. We are sure that this kind of tournaments will definitely encourage the youth who love to play football and we expect a vast crowd will gather at the venues to witness this tournament played by players of yesteryear.”

The hosts, Colombo Veterans FC, consisting of several former national players, has won this tournament four times and will be eyeing the title for the fifth time this year.

India win against dogged Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka fell to India 2-0 in their opening group B game of the SAFF.

Colombo Veterans FC has been taking part in this tournament from the inception and has won the inaugural International Masters Soccer Tournament which was held in Singapore in 2006.

They were joint champions with Singapore in 2008 and became champions in 2011 and last year in Dubai. Apart from this Colombo Veterans FC were runner-up in 2007, 2012, 2013 and 2015
