Bhutan demolished Sri Lanka 6-0 in their final group A match to book a semi-final place in the 2017 SAFF U15 Championship at the ANFA Complex in Nepal.

Sri Lanka coming off a 4-0 hammering at the hands of Bangladesh in the first match, needed to win this to make it to the semi-finals.

Ahmed Fahim scored a hat-trick as Bangladesh thumped a listless Sri Lankan side 4-0 in the opening..

However, Sri Lanka were unable to string together 3-4 passes at a go, much like their match against Bangladesh, as Bhutan dominated play with their slick passing. Bhutan were camped in the opposition half and in the 9th minute Dorji Khando gave the Bhutanese a well-deserved lead as he slotted past the goalkeeper from a through ball.

Khando doubled the lead in the 24th minute as a low cross into the box found him unmarked inside the six yard and he made no mistake in putting it in.

Once again Sri Lanka’s poor defending gifted the third in the 31st minute, when an un-cleared cross fell to Kinga Wangchuk, who from an acute angle sent the ball to the far corner.

Minutes later Bhutan’s wonderful passing game was on show and if not for the crossbar they would have got their 4th. Bhutan kept on toying with the Sri Lanka defence as a goal was disallowed for off-side and another from close range was saved by Ashaktha Mihiru.

Another swift passing move brought about the 4th goal with Kelzang Jigmi scoring in the 43rd minute. The superiority of Bhutan’s passing game was such, a 14 pass move almost resulted in a goal had the Bhutan player been able to keep it down.

Bhutan went into half time with the game in the bag as Jigmi scored the 5th in first half injury time.

Half time – Sri Lanka 0 – 5 Bhutan

With the game already lost, Sri Lanka went on an ultra-defensive role to stop the bleeding of goals. They almost achieved it but a 90th minute unmarked header from Siddharth Gurung off a corner made it 6-0 to complete the rout.

Sri Lanka lacked confidence and a plan from the onset and whenever they got possession most of the players tried playing all on their own without passing to the teammates who were in acres of space and were content on hacking the ball down field.

Full time – Sri Lanka 0 – 6 Bhutan

The South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) has postponed the 12th edition of SAFF Championship which was scheduled to take place in Bangladesh on 25th December 2017, to May 2018.

Keeping in mind the busy schedule because of the upcoming FIFA U17 World Cup, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) has requested the organisers of SAFF Championship to postpone it to next year. The tournament will now be held from the 1st-12th May.

FFSL sacks National Coaches

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) today (27th July)..

The tournament was earlier scheduled to be played in December 2017 but due to India hosting the 2017 FIFA U17 World Cup in October, the Indian Super League which is seen to be an 11-team affair will start late. ISL will, thus, go beyond December, the month when the 12th edition of the biennial tournament was originally scheduled in Bangladesh.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) in a press release stated, “The executive committee agreed to the proposal of the SAFF Committee to play the tournament in Bangladesh from May 1-12.

The decision was made by the executive committee of SAFF based on a request from India, the most successful country in the regional tournament who won the last edition in December 2015/January 2016 at home in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ahmed Fahim scored a hat-trick as Bangladesh thumped a listless Sri Lankan side 4-0 in the opening…

“We can’t hold the SAFF Championship without India, who have a busy international and domestic schedule. So we had to drop the idea of holding it in December this year. Now we have prepared a proposal to hold it from May 1 next year after the completion of the ISL,” said SAFF general secretary Anwarul Haque Helal.

The SAFF secretariat is also uncertain regarding the number of participants as Pakistan have not been taking part in any international tournaments due to internal problems while Afghanistan, who quit SAFF, were invited to take part in the championship.

“We will decide on the number of participating teams at our next executive meeting as we are not sure whether Pakistan will take part after they withdrew from the upcoming age-level tournaments citing internal issues. The meeting will also have to take a decision whether to invite Afghanistan again. There is a demand from the sponsors to hold the championship with eight nations,” Helal told reporters.

Ahmed Fahim scored a hat-trick as Bangladesh thumped a listless Sri Lankan side 4-0 in the opening game of the 2017 SAFF U15 Championship at the ANFA Complex in Nepal.

Sri Lanka were formed to defend from the outset as all 11 were behind the ball and even inside their own half most of the time. Sri Lanka rarely had possession and when they did were unable to put together 3-4 passes.

Squad finalized for SAFF U15 Championship

Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) has selected a 23-player squad for the South Asian..

Bangladesh, though they had possession, took time to adjust to the ultra-defensive tactics of the Sri Lankans. Their first opportunity came in the 22nd minute via a free-kick from the edge of the box which the Sri Lankan skipper Sandeepa Waas divided to punch it away at his near post.

Sri Lanka were dealt with a big blow when their best player on the park Mohamed Rikaz was injured and had to be replaced by Ekinam Diniyas in the 28th minute. A minute later Bangladesh registered their first goal when Ahmed Fahim drove into the box on the left and shot past the goalkeeper from an angle.

Minutes later they added the 2nd from a neatly taken free-kick. A training ground move saw Fahim again taking the defence by surprise and shooting beyond the diving Waas into the corner.

On the stoke of half time an intended cross from Nasmul Biswas swerved in and dipped into the goal at the far post to make it 3-0 going into the break.

Half time – Bangladesh 3 – 0 Sri Lanka

The 2nd half was much of the same as Ashaktha Mihiru, who substituted Sandeepa Waas during the break, was forced into a save early on and a volley from a Bangladesh player crashed off the upright and away from danger.

Bangladesh was awarded a penalty in the 76th minute as Fahim drilled it into the goal to complete his hat-trick. With minutes, remaining Mihiru was forced into another save at his near post, which bounced off the upright and was collected again by him.

Full time – Bangladesh 4 – 0 Sri Lanka

The Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) today (27th July) has removed the coaches of the national side.

The three removed coaches are, head coach Dudley Steinwall, assistant coach Devasagayam Rajamani and goalkeeping coach Mahinda Galagedara. The FFSL confirmed the decision through a media release.

“Please be informed that the coaching staff of Senior National Team were withdrawn from services as the National Team would not engage in any international matches in the near future,” the media release mentioned.

“The SAFF Football Championship which was scheduled to be held in December 2017 had been postponed indefinitely as the National Team of India has not confirmed their participation yet,” it went onto say.

There had been rumours that the FFSL had been mulling the removal of the coaches but the decision comes as a surprise, given the fact that Dudley Steinwall had only led the side on one tour, even though he had been working as the head coach since April 2016. The decision reflects more on an administration decision rather than a decision taken on performance.

Dudley Steinwall appointed coach of Sri Lanka

Former Sri Lanka and Renown SC captain Dudley Steinwall has been appointed…

Steinwall talked about International friendlies at home and away after he was appointed but none were accommodated by the FFSL.

It is believed that the decision to sack the coaches had been taken by the recently appointed National Teams Management committee headed by Major General Athula Kodippilly.

A source close to the FFSL mentioned,

“We don’t think the coaches that were there were suited for the job. FFSL wants to have a long-term plan.”

ThePapare.com also understands that the FFSL are thinking of hiring a local coach, in which back to back Dialog Champions League winning Colombo FC head coach Mohamed Roomy and Renown SC head coach Mohamed Amanulla are front runners.

ThePapare.com’s efforts to contact Dudley Steinwall proved futile.

Who do you think should be the next head coach of the Sri Lanka National Football team?
