Sangeeth Cooray and Kamindu Mendis added 165 runs for the second wicket on day two of the first unofficial Test match between Sri Lanka ‘A’ and Bangladesh ‘A’ in Hambanthota.

Former St. Sebastian’s College opening batsman Sangeeth Cooray scored his seventh first-class century as Sri Lanka ‘A’ dominated second days’ play in the first unofficial Test match against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Hambanthota on Monday (30th).

Opening day of 1st Unofficial Test ends uninterrupted

After bundling out the visitors to 360 in the opening session on day two, the hosts posted 204 for 2 at stumps with only a day left in the match.

Resuming from their overnight score of 270 for 6, Bangladesh ‘A’ managed to post 90 more runs in the first session as off-spinning all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz reached a useful fifty off 92 balls. However, fast-bowler Asitha Fernando and off-spinner Ramesh Mendis wrapped the visitors’ innings at the stroke of lunch.

Fernando was the most impressive bowler for the home team ending with 3 for 59, while Mendis scalped 3 wickets for 57 runs.

At the start of the post-lunch session, Sri Lanka’s young opening batter Pathum Nissanka lasted only 24 balls as he was stuck plumb in front by Ebadat Hossain.

Former Sri Lanka U19 captain, Kamindu Mendis celebrating his 21st birthday walked in at number three and solidified the Lankan innings.

Both the left-handers – Mendis and Cooray, were untroubled by the Bangladeshi challenge as they pounced on the opportunity of batting long on a perfect surface.

They added 165 valuable runs for the second wicket before Miraz ended Cooray’s magnificent innings of 104. He smashed 15 fours during his 151-ball before nicking to first slip.

Former Richmondite, Mendis looked solid from one end as he batted through till bad light brought a premature end to play. He remained unbeaten on 79 with 8 fours, while skipper Ashan Priyanjan was on 5*.
