Second seed Anika Seneviratne was stunned by unseeded Medhira Samarasinghe in the Womens Open Singles in the 102nd Nationals and Junior Nationals Tennis championships, played at the SLTA today (August 10).

Meanwhile favourites, Sankha Athukoarala and Yasitha De Silva, seeded number 1 went on to win the Mens Open Doubles.

Unseeded Viranka Fernando clinched the Lanka Plate – Mens Consolations tie played against Kevin Mekandarajah.

The first final to take place today (August 10th) was the Mens Opens Doubles in which first seeded Sankha Athukoarala and Yasitha De Silva took on unseeded Innthujan Selverathnaraja

The game was a one-sided affair from the onset, ending in quick time as the first seeded duo clinched victory, in straight sets 6-3 6-3.

Unseeded duo, Viranka Fernando went head to head with Kevin Mekandarajah soon after in the Lanka Plate – Mens Consolations tie. Viranka Fernando was made to work hard but managed to get over the line.

In the Womens Open Singles, underdog Medhira Samarasinghe took on Anika Seneviratne who currently is in red hot form.

Samarasinghe began the brighter of the two and coasted through the first set winning 6-2 without breaking a sweat.

Seneviratne knew things needed to change, however it did not as underdog Samarasinghe shocked the Tennis community beating favourite and second seed Seneviratne in straight sets.

The game ended in quick time as Medhira Samarasinhe won 6-2 6-2 to be crowned the champion of the Womens Open Singles.
