50th Hockey Nationals to get underway this weekend

The most anticipated tournament in the Schools hockey calendar, the Schools’ Under 19 Hockey Nationals is to commence on 10th of June and go on to the 12th of June 2017 at the Colombo Astro Turf, Royal College Sports Grounds and St. Peter’s College Grounds.

The importance of this year’s tournament is that it is being conducted for the 50th occasion under the guidance of the Sri Lanka Schools’ Hockey Association which is headed by President Mr. Dampriya Wanasinghe and Hony. Secretary Anurudda Herath Bandara this year. The tournament is organized by Sri Lanka Schools Hockey Association with the help of Western Province Schools’ hockey association. This will be a great opportunity for all the school hockey players to show their skills on a the national stage.

In the girls’ category, Colombo Reds, Colombo Blues, Kandy Whites, Kandy Blues, Matale Golds, Matale Maroons, Kaluthara and Jaffna will be competing against each other for the championship. The boys’ category comprises of Kandy Blues, Kandy Whites, Colombo Reds, Colombo Blues, Matale Golds, Matale Maroons, Puttalam, Galle A, Galle B, Kaluthara, Gampha and Jaffna.

In 2016 the girls’ championship was won by the Kandy Blues led by Nadeesha Wanigadehetti and Wathsala Bandara of Anthony’s Girls College and Seethadevi Balika Vidyalaya Kandy respectively while Ruwini Yeshani of Ladies’ College captained the Colombo Reds team who took away the 1st runner up trophy.

In the boys’ category Abdul Rahuman of D.S. Senanayake College Colombo captained the Champions Colombo Reds and Dhananjaya Bandara of Christ church Matale captained the runners up, Matale Golds.
