30th AVI Badminton league is about to step into the finale

Novice Badminton championships organized by the Mercantile Badminton Association will see the finals on the 7th of April at S. Thomas’ College premises. 

The MBA Badminton championship, proudly sponsored by DSI Samson Pvt. Limited, has produced the best players to battle for the winning title this Sunday. From the April 3, 2013 the event has featured quarter finals and semifinals for men’s single, men’s double, women’s single, women’s double, mixed doubles, men’s veterans, women’s veterans and master’s single events. The players for these events were featured from many associations ranging from Eskimo to Ceylinco, HDDEx, NTB and many more.

Looking into the summary of performances in the experience so far, in the Men’s singles category the most notable performance was from Avindra Wahala representing HDDEx taking the lead in the first two matches itself breaking into the semifinals. His outstanding performance was even recorded at semi-finals once again making his way to the finals winning the first two matches itself: 21/8 and 21/17. The quarter finalist playing at the other end with Avindra was Prathiba Rajapaksha also representing HDDEx. Though Prathiba had a strong side in the first half of the game beating Mahesh Fernando it didn’t quite work his way with Avindra. 

Competing with Avindra for finals it’sMahelaThalpawila from Ceylinco.  Mahela has beat  RandikaFenando and LaksaraAravinda at semifinals and quarter finals respectively on his journey to finals. 

On female performances in the singles events Ruwanthi Vidyani and Upeksha Fonseka were notable knocking out the opponents just below 5 points while they reached the winning 21 points margin in the quarterfinals rounds. However in the battle between Ruwanthi and Upeksha at the semifinals Ruwanthi took scored the winning points qualifying herself for the finals. Thilini Gunathilaka of NTB also was at a moderate start but gained control over the game as she moved to the semifinals. On this Thilini took over Sahani Rathnayake(NDB) and Ruwanthi Vidyani(Francisku).

The most  energetic events of the championships were the doubles of both men’s and women’s. On the men’s doubles Muditha / Prathiba Rajapaksha (HDDEx), Navinda Malitha / Nalinda Salitha (Virtusa) and Carl De Silva(JKH) / Gene De Silva(Srilankan) were all able to limit the quarter round to just two games winning the first two also Navindra and Nalinda winning for 21/6 marking  good performances. Taking tough challenges considering the competition finalists for the men’s doubles were marked by Navinda / Nalinda and Lahiru /Patuma. 

Women’s doubles quarter finals were limited only to two matchs considering the play layout. Match between Kesara Amaradasa / Bagya de Silva (Millennium) and Melissa Anjali / ThiliniPerera(ExpoLanka) were directly a semifinal round. Teaming up at the other semis Indika Gunasena(SCB) / Nadeesha Sugathadasa(WNS) beatSahani Rathnayake/ Lakmini Rajapaksha(NDB) for 9/21,21/11,21/10

The Badminton championship featured especial veteran’s round for both men and women to recognize gaming talents of over 40 age category. The over 50 master’s rounds were limited to men’s but gained much attention throughout. 

All the final rounds of the badminton league are yet to take the final rounds on the 7th of April 2013 crowning the novice champion for the 30th stretch. The play line up will be as follows:
