23 meet records at Junior Nationals and Vidhsha Lakshani to USA

57th Junior National Championships 2014 organised by Sri Lanka Athletics Association concluded yesterday at Sugathadasa stadium Colombo.

The event was conducted from 2nd to 05th May with Bank of Ceylon (BOC) as main sponsors. For the junior athletes this becomes the start line for their national and international journey and this year more than 3400 athletes in age groups of under 16, 18, 20 and 23 competed for many disciplines.

 

The Best performances from the athletes were appreciated and challenge trophies awarded as follows :

Best Athlete Boys U16 – NAQNA Kurera Challenge Trophy –

        Asiri Wijesekara   – Gateway College, Rajagiriya  (100M – 11.21sec)

Best Athlete Girls U16 – Susanthika Jayasinghe Challenge Trophy-

         Shasheema Rajapaksha   – Rathnawali B.V Gampaha (100M  – 12.85sec)

 

Best Athlete Boys U18 – N.Vyrawanathan Challenge Trophy  –

Event manager Mr G LS Perera stated that 23 new meet records set by athletes and this is an improvement when considering the past.

Mr Perera also confirmed  Vidhsha Lakshani from Newstead Girls’ College, Negombo who won woman’s U20 Triple Jump with 12.99M and Arosha Gamage (Sri Lanka junior pool) who clocked 10.52sec in 100M man’s fitness trial at Diyagama last week will be selected to IAAF WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Eugene, USA from 22-27 July 2014.

 

When ThePapare inquired about anti-doping process he said all athletes went for random tests and can claim all clean.  He also informed that there will be a final trial for Asian Games and Commonwealth Games and all athletes informed and will be held from 16th – 17th May at Sugathadasa Stadium Colombo and it is compulsory for all national level athletes and junior athletes also to compete. Entry will be close on 11th May 2014.

 

Mr Perera made a plea for sponsors and media to come forward take athletics to next level with athletics association and ministry sports.
