200 expected for Junior South Asian Championship in Colombo

Sri Lanka will be hosting the Junior South Asian Athletic Championship at the Sugathadasa stadium on the 4th and the 5th of May 2018.

The regional competition will serve as an ideal opportunity for the young athletes who will have their eyes set on the Asian Junior Athletic championship which will be held in Gifu, Japan from the 7th to the 10th of June 2018.

Updating the media regarding the upcoming Junior SAG Athletic Championship, President of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka Major General Palith Fernando stated that they are expecting a total participation of 200 athletes from 7 nations with India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Nepal and host Sri Lanka having confirmed the participation in the competition. Only Afghanistan will not be sending a team for the competition.

As the host nation, Sri Lanka are hoping to field 3 athletes per event which will provide an invaluable opportunity for the local youngsters where they will participate in an international competition.  It will also serve as an ideal screening event for the Asian Junior Athletic Championship where the selectors will be able to witness how the young athletes take on the challenge of international competitors.

The junior squad which will be finalized at the end of the Junior National Championship scheduled to be held from 23rd to 25th  April, and is expected to undergo a residential training in Colombo where they will be housed together as a squad with a specially appointed committee handling the responsibility of grooming the young talent.
