11th Blue, Gold & Blue Volleyball Championship

The 11th Blue, Gold & Blue Western Province Invitation Schools’ Volleyball Championship will be worked off on the 24th & 25th of June at the Royal College Volleyball Court.

The tournament is organized and conducted by the Royal College Volleyball Advisory and Management Committee (RCVAMC) under the patronage of the Royal College Union and is expecting a participation of more than 100 teams representing more than 50 schools in the Western province.

This competition has gained immense popularity among top volleyball playing schools in the Western Province. The tournament will be conducted in three age groups for boys – U16, U18 & U20 and U20 for the girls.

25 boys for Asian Schools’ Volleyball training

A 25 member pool was selected for training ahead of the 5th Asian Schools’ Boys Volleyball..

“Our main objective is to conduct a quality Schools’ Volleyball tournament, thereby uplifting the standards of the national sport. At the same time, we want to promote this game both at the national and college level. Since its formation in 2005, we have come a long way with this tournament and it being held for the 11th successive year is the best testimony to this,” said Mr. Nirmala Sarathchchndra – President of the RCVAMC.

“By today the RCVAMC has managed to transform volleyball as one of the best performing sports at Royal where college has produced a number of outstanding junior national volleyball players during the recent past, which is a remarkable feat indeed,” he added.

The defending champions De Mazenod College, Kandana will face stiff challenge from many determined teams including last year’s runners-up Royal College, Colombo. Last year’s U16 and U18 championships were won by Gonsalvez College and Vidyartha Vishwa Vidya Peetaya respectively while Subashi Royal College and Royal College, Colombo became the runners-up in the respective divisions.

Agamathi Balika Vidyalaya, Panadura won the girls’ U20 championship while Kehana Vidyalaya became the runners-up. The country’s top most referees will officiate at this tournament with attractive trophies and medals on offer. Special awards for the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament and the Best Setter too would be on offer in both categories.   

The opening ceremony will be held on the first day, June 24 at 8.00am while the semi-finals and the finals will start from 10.30am on the second day.
