Kelly, Salinda and Ashen drive Joes to victory

St. Joseph’s overcame DS Senanayake by 7 wickets, while Isipathana registered 1st innings win against Royal College in the Singer Schools U19 Division 1 two-day cricket tournament which concluded today.

The Josephians who resumed day two on 163/4, went on to post a formidable 258/8 with dashing left-hander Revan Kelly finishing it off with an outstanding 121. Mithushan Kumara was the main striker for the home team with 4 scalps.

Coming in to the 2nd essay, DS Senanayake started off strongly with 70/2. However, the Josephian spin twins Salinda Senevirathne and Ashen Daniel came in handy as they grabbed 4 wickets apiece to demolish DS Senanayeke batting to 132 all out.

Left-arm spinner Salinda completed 9 for 77 in the match, while off-spinner Ashen claimed 9 for 107 to take 18 out of 20 DS Senanayake wickets.

Chasing 61 to win, the lads from Darley Road got to the target losing only 3 wickets. St. Joseph’s managed to register their second win in the 2017/18 season.

Royal vs Isipathana

Isipathana College started off the second day with 9 wickets remaining. Leshan Amarasinghe was the highlight for the visitors as he stroked 99 off 174 balls that included 10 fours and a six. He missed his century trying to take a quick single to mid-on.

Isipathana College eventually got bowled out for 290 as they secure a 1st innings win against the Royalists in the traditional encounter which was worked off today at Reid Avenue.

Maris Stella College vs St. Aloysius’ College

The lads from Galle won the toss and opted to bat first on a dry surface in the group ‘B’ encounter at Galle International Stadium. Right-arm off spinner Ravindu Suharshana claimed 5/41 to rattle the strong Aloysius’ batting line-up as they were bowled out for a paltry 145 inside 64 overs.

In reply, the visitors were strongly placed on 101/3 with Roshen Fernando making an unbeaten half-ton at close of play.

Been asked to bat first Richmond College posted a fighting 245 in the group ‘C’ encounter which commenced today at Surray Village grounds.

The two Richmond right-handers Adithya Siriwardena and Thaveesha Abhishek stroked half-tons to edge over the lads from Wennappuwa in the opening day.
